Through the power of pedals and the guidance of Slimming World I will be slim

Love Food February: Our Valentines Meal

I’m not one to go mad for Valentines Day. I don’t believe in the 8 years of being with my wife that we have ever gone out on or around Valentines Day. I don’t see the point in paying more for something because of the date. Not only that, but everywhere starts taking bookings from what seems June, so it must get busy early on.

Trying to lose weight also adds a challenge to Valentines Day. People seem to go mad with food on this day. Whether it’s chocolate or a meal out, it’s hardly the healthiest day of the year. This is also another reason why I prefer to eat at home instead of going out on this night.

Now, with wifey also being on plan at the moment with Slimming World. I couldn’t just go out and buy her a Milk Tray or something. As much as I would have loved to as I would have shared it, I couldn’t do it to her, not with how well she’s doing with her weight loss at the moment.

I had to get creative. But I wanted to give her something that would last. I hate buying flowers because no more than two weeks later they’re heading for the bin. I might as well chuck £20 in the bin. So I set out to make something personal, something which only she would appreciate. Welcome the 365 jar.

This jar is completely syn free, will not add any unwanted calories and lasts an entire year. Now, how’s that for a Valentine’s gift?

On to why we’re reading this post now. The food. After giving this 365 jar to the wife in the morning, she took it upon herself to cook one hell of a meal. Usually, I have cooked on Valentines Day as a treat for her, but not this year.

Starter

I was treated to a full 3-course meal on Valentines Day. Starting with homemade, syn free scotch eggs. These balls of meat wrapping a boiled egg were plain awesome. Best of all they’re syn free as it’s just an egg and less than 5% pork mince. No breadcrumbs like shop bought ones, but they didn’t need them, they were perfect as they were. Served on a bed of watercress and a tablespoon of Sweet Chilli Sauce (half a syn).

Main

For the main course, I was given a big plate of Beef Stroganoff. I’m a sucker for wintery food when it’s not particularly warm out and wintery food doesn’t come much better than this. Beef and Onion in a beautiful creamy sauce is spot on. Served with Roast Potatoes (seasoned of course) and Carrots, this entire course was completely syn free! This recipe I am going to have to add to my list to upload to this blog.

Dessert

We left it a little while before having dessert, letting the main and starter settle a bit first. I was expecting something like apple crumble and custard (not on plan but I know it’s one of wifeys favourites). What I wasn’t expecting was this Strawberry Bonanza (that’s the name I gave it).

Made of Strawberries dipping in Chocolate, Strawberry Jelly and a Strawberry on top of a Meringue. This was the perfect end to a perfect meal. This little beauty cost 6 syns, but it was well worth it. For the whole meal to come in at 6 and a half syns was incredible!

Just spending time with the wife is enough for me on Valentines Day. We don’t need to make any huge gesture to show how much we love each other, but we do enjoy good homecooked food. So we just indulge at home while others pay a small fortune for something that will be a quarter of the price the following day.

I’ll Reflect, But This Post Isn’t About Me

Usually, after a Wednesday weigh in, I reflect on the last week. I am still doing that here, but not for me. I’m not the only person on this wonderful journey to lose weight. There are two of us in our house. Yes, my wonderful better other half is also losing weight well too.

Like me, my wife has done Slimming World time after time, even became a consultant and had her own group for a while. I bet if we asked her, she’d say being a Slimming World consultant was the best job she’s had. You could tell when running the groups, she loved it.

I speak of her being a Slimming World consultant in the past tense, as it was before child number 2 came on the scene and before we moved to be closer to my family. I’ll admit I got roped in by choice. I helped with some of the admin sides of the job and made some of the advertising posters for her. I even helped walking the miles posting leaflets through 1000’s of doors around the area.

Love Food February: The Love For Chinese

So today we’ll talk about that Chinese Takeaway. A little while ago, wifey really wanted to make a Chinese Fakeaway buffet. We had planned the Saturday night originally, but that went out the window when the little one had a funny turn. Sitting in the hospital to see a doc to get discharged with no issue was done instead.

So on the Monday she went all out and made the best Chinese Fakeaway I’ve had. Best of all it was all on plan with Slimming World.

Now depending on your tastes, there are different dishes which everyone loves. If we ever have a takeaway or eat at a Chinese restaurant, we always have a mix of different things and share between us – just what we do. I know some people (like my lil’ brother) will just order they like and have that.

What Keeps Me Motivated?

These last couple of days have been huge for me motivation wise. Losing weight can be a horrendous journey. You have good weeks and you have bad weeks. On the bad weeks, you have to remember why you’re doing this and look back at what keeps you going.

After feeling left wanting last week with my single pound lost, I wanted more this week. More importantly, I wanted that 2 and a half stone award. I started the week like nothing was going to stop me. I was not going to be disappointed again, not when I’m so close to that next award.

The week has been rather topsy turvy though. Albeit starting out well Through Thursday and Friday, the weekend came and left most of us in the family with a stomach bug. It was Tuesday again before we all started to feel normal again. But after a spout of illness like that, I usually turn to comfort food when I get my appetite back.

Benefits Of Getting Moving

For years I’ve always said exercise is dangerous. Exercise causes injuries which can hurt and can stop you going to work and earning a wage. Pretty dangerous when you’ve a family to support. But in reality, exercise is brilliant if you do it properly.

When I was younger and at school, I did plenty of exercise. Whether it was walking to school, running around in PE at school or going out with friends outside of school, I was always doing something. Then when I left school it started to subside. I passed my driving test and started driving everywhere instead of walking or getting on the bike. As much as I have relied on driving for work etc, it really killed me health wise.

I gained weight rapidly after passing my driving test. That mixed with working meant I had money. Where did I spend money? Food outlets such as McDonalds, Frankie and Bennys, the local Chip Shop, the pub. I spent money on food like it was going out of fashion because in my late teens it was a way of getting out of the house.

End Of #REDJanuary | My Take On Zwift

It’s February people, which means an end to #REDJanuary for this year. I complete every ride through January on the trainer as I simply don’t have the kit, nor the desire, to go outside on the bike when it’s cold, by cold I mean lower than 5 deg C. I’m simply not equipped to ride in temperatures lower than that.

Out of the 31 days of January I managed to ride on 29 of them. Two less than I aimed for, but still more than I imagined I would complete. A lot of people who have done #REDJanuary have raised money for the UK Charity Mind. It’s kind of what #REDJanuary was for, but I didn’t pursue any fundraising, purely on the basis that I thought I would have given up a week into January. But here we are with nearly every day completed.

I set out with a goal of riding 310 miles through January which would mean riding 10 miles per day on average. In the end, I managed a shade over 280 miles. Considering from June to December 2018 I only rode 196 miles I thought this was really good going. I’ve done more miles in a month than in 6 months last year.
