Who doesn’t like chips? I don’t mean the thinly sliced potato snack that is found in bags, my friends over the pond, I mean real British chips. Chips go with just about anything and they’re a versatile side to accompany any dish.

Slimming World chips are rather easy to make. You cut up potatoes into long sticks about 1cm x 1cm in width. You douse them in fry-light (or another low-calorie cooking spray) and cook them. I often cooked them in the oven, but since we’ve bought an ActiFry, they’re even better!

Now you’re thinking “Chips are chips and we’ve known about Slimming World chips for a while”. Well, guess what… they can be even better, even tastier and even naughtier (without the syns) that you thought. Yes ladies and gentlemen, making chips messy is a whole new level of chip greatness!

Don’t worry, when I say messy I don’t mean you need to change out of your favourite jumper to eat them, no. I mean there are so many flavours in a single side dish it’s hard to comprehend. There are so many textures, you think ‘it can’t be healthy’.

These chips don’t just complement your main dish, they form part of your main dish. That Gammon Steak you’ve just grilled off… that’s not your main dish now, that will simply accompany the messy chips.

You can eat these messy chips as part of a luscious meal, or you can eat them as they are. Make enough of them and they become a meal in themselves.

If you follow me on Instagram, you will have seen these messy chips already. I posted them a couple of weeks ago alongside my Gammon Steak. If you’ve not seen, you can see here.

But nevermind slavering over the pictures of these delights, you need to make them. Of course, if you’re going to nail making them, you’re going to need to know-how. This is where you’re friendly fatmanslimming comes in. I’ll let you know how to make these beautiful sticks of tastiness.

  • Potatoes – We usually use 1 large potato per person in our house
  • Onion – 1 large
  • Peppers – 1 Green and 1 Red
  • Bacon – a couple of rashers each (all visible fat removed)
  • Grated Cheese (use your Healthy Extra A if you’re on Slimming World to make these syn free)
  • JD Seasonings Salt n Pepper Chips
  • Low-calorie cooking spray

  1. Slice your potatoes into long chips like sticks (typical British chunky chips are around 1cm x 1cm in thickness).
  2. If you’re oven cooking, preheat the over the 180 degrees Celcius and put the chips in a microwavable bowl/container then cook the chips in a microwave on full power for 5-7 minutes (enough so they starting to soften).
  3. Transfer the softened chips to an ovenproof tray and bake for around 15 minutes.
  4. If you’re using an ActiFry – no need to microwave your chips, just add them to the ActiFry bowl and spray them liberally with your cooking spray. Turn them on for about 15 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, Dice the Onion, Slice the Peppers and cut up the Bacon into 1cm x 1cm squares.
  6. After the chips have been cooking for about 15 minutes, spread over the Bacon, Onion and Peppers. Spray over with your low-calorie cooking spray again and place back in the oven/ActiFry for a further 10 minutes.
  7. By now your chips should be getting nice and crispy. Remove the chips from the oven/ActiFry and sprinkle over the Grated Cheese before putting back in for a final 2 minutes. QUICK TIP: If you are using an ActiFry, remove your paddle for the last two minutes so the cheese just melts on top.
