#REDJanuary: Week 3 In Review

This last week has been difficult. Trying to juggle family time, cycling and spending time with the wife has been tough. I haven’t got on the bike anywhere near as much as I’d like to have done, but I’ve still been on every day.

The week started off OK, completing the usual programs, but by the time I had got to the weekend I struggled to put in the time needed to complete the planned long ride for the Fondo training.

Day 15

#REDJanuary: Fondo – Step-Down Intervals
Location:
New York (Zwift)

If you see a title called Step-Down you’d think things were getting easier. Oh no, this was the toughest Fondo training workout I’ve done so far. Constantly increasing the larger intervals then stepping down to a recovery for a couple of minutes. But I completed I got in some decent distance around New York (shudder).

Day 16

#REDJanuary: Active Recovery
Location:
New York (Zwift)

Wednesday morning at 05:42 (that’s AM!) I was on the bike. Wednesday is a killer day as it’s the only time I can get on the bike as we have fat class in the evening (Slimming World). But I often feel better for getting up earlier to ride, I just don’t do it often enough.

Day 17

#REDJanuary: Fondo – Low-Cadence Intervals
Location:
Watopia

Woohoo, back to Watopia. This Fondo workout concentrated on cadence with the higher power intervals at 55rpm and the lower power intervals up at 85rpm. I normally sit between 70 and 80 rpm when riding normally. I found the lower cadence was harder on the legs, but I wasn’t as out of breath as usual. Good to know I can manage lower cadence without any issues.

Day 18

#REDJanuary: Free Ride
Location:
Watopia (Zwift)

Using the flat route in Watopia I did a little more than 1 lap of the Flat Route. I love riding Zwift in Watopia, the scenery is so nice – something I don’t get at this time of year due to darkness. Notice the Ferris wheel? Maybe something to rival the London Eye?

Day 19

#REDJanuary: Active Recovery
Location:
Watopia (Zwift)

Plans can change at a moments notice when you have kids and today was no different. After planning on a 1 hour 40 minute Fondo Long Ride, I ended up just having enough time in the evening to do one of my custom workouts. Still, a ride is a ride and when you’re riding every day for a month it all counts.

Day 20

#REDJanuary: Free Ride
Location:
London (Zwift)

Ah back in my nation’s capital. After Saturdays non-ride of the Fondo Long Ride workout I wanted to try and fit it in today (Sunday) but still didn’t find the time. 100 minutes is a fair chunk. Still, I managed to get on the bike at 20:12 in the evening, managed a few short miles before calling it off as my head just wasn’t in it after today.

Day 21

#REDJanuary: Free Ride
Location:
London (Zwift)

I had planned a longer and further ride for Monday evening but started having an issue with the Turbo Trainer which made me bail on the ride. For some reason after 10 minutes of riding the trainer gives up all resistance and I’m just pedalling against the weel, dropping from 155 watts to 95 just like that. Safe to say I will be looking into this later today to see if I can find the cause of the issue.

De-motivated

After the weekend and not being able to get on the bike to be able to complete the planned Fondo Long Ride training workout, I’m feeling a little deflated and de-motivated. It doesn’t help that my trainer seems to have developed some sort of fault, but hopefully, that won’t be a big issue to resolve.

I’ll still be looking to get on as much as possible this week. I’m planning on an earlier tea tonight as I’m working from home, so hopefully as soon as the kids are in bed I can jump on for a decent ride. Let’s see. Happy Tuesday folks!
